some of this could be empirically addressed say by looking at the H index/rate my prof/google hits/invites/awards/age for women professors and men. If women professors tend to perform better across a range of metrics than men (yes all metrics are imperfect but all show something) then that would indicate a glass ceiling in a more objectively verifiable way.

Nicely done! Would reversing the introduction's first two paragraphs be worth considering? That second one packs a lot of, er, punch. I would hate for curious readers to miss it by not reading far enough.

Thanks to those of you who have replied. I also received some positive comments via email, and on Twitter. I suppose people might be reluctant to express negative ones, even though I did my best to be as inviting as possible. I do not want to clutter anyone's inbox with stuff most don't value.

As this Sub is new, I plan to continue experimenting. The core will be longform essays, like the first on academic radicalization and the second on microaggression research. There will be more Wooden Stakes down the road, and maybe at least 1-2 other shortform essay types, at least at first.

Please continue down this path - most worthwhile. This work is of much more than academic interest, too, as it often finds it way to HR departments, Board meetings, and similar.
